The Great Invocation of Power and Light
Excerpt from the forthcoming book, A Planetary Awakening: Reflections on the
Teachings of the Tibetan in the Works of Alice A. Bailey by Kathy
Newburn
"The Great Invocation is sometimes called the Invocation for Power and
Light. It is said to be the most powerful tool we have to help prepare human consciousness for the coming
events. Although it was only given out for our use a few decades ago, the Invocation is actually of ancient origin.
Its potency is so great, however, that it could not have been given out prior to this time. The timing of its release
had to be right and was related to the triumph of the forces of thelight and goodwill that occurred as a result of
the Allied victory in World War II. This triumph signaled that humanity had taken a major step forward into the light
of liberation and could effectively make use of the Invocation. While many prayers are used with personal intention,
the power of the Invocation lies in its impersonality; it is not focused upon the needs and wants of the
individual but, rather, on the larger concerns of humanity and the planet as a whole. As such, its use by large
numbers of people can produce powerful changes for all forms of life.
"No organization, religion, or spiritual group “owns”
the Invocation--it is non-sectarian and can be used effectively by all people. Although in its original wording
it refers to Christ, it is not a Christian prayer and can and should be used by people of all faiths and also
those who hold to no particular faith at all. The Invocation has currently been translated into over 70 languages
and is used in most countries in the world, although it must be more widely distributed before its true potency
can be realized. Humanity has never come together and used a single spiritual mantram. We haven’t tested
the effectiveness of such an activity although certainly the Lord´s Prayer holds a central place within the
Piscean age. The Great Invocation can hold a similar place of prominence within the coming Aquarian Age, however
its effectiveness will not be limited to one religious group because it is a prayer for all humanity.
"A few years ago, an adapted version of the Great Invocation was
offered by the Lucis Trust. Many other individuals and groups have also offered alternate wordings over the years.
And while many people naturally prefer to use the original wording as given out by the Tibetan teacher and Alice
Bailey, the adapted wording has been welcomed by many others. The purity and strength of the original Invocation
cannot be denied. Indeed, Foster Bailey (Alice Bailey´s husband and co-worker) said that this act of
cooperation between Alice Bailey and the Tibetan was perhaps their single greatest achievement. This act, finished
as the sun was rising, was said to have left Bailey completely drained--yet exhilarated. It is perhaps
understandable then that serious students of the Ageless Wisdom teachings would prefer the original wording. The
adapted Invocation, however, was never meant to supplant the original, it was merely meant as an alternative that
would appeal to a larger audience.
"The Invocation was given out over sixty years ago. The
world has changed drastically since that time. Over the years, it became apparent that the Great Invocation was
never going to achieve the status of a world prayer as the Tibetan had foretold until and unless it was adapted
to meet the varied needs of people today. We live in an age in which the use of language is very important in
creating unity or divisiveness. Language that is perceived to be archaic or offensive (however pure its
original intention) is rejected out of hand by many people today. The growth of the movement for the liberation
of women ignited a demand that language reflect an egalitarian worldview and the original wording of the Great
Invocation offends many who hold to those sensibilities.
"The Masters are pragmatic individuals; they leave it up to
their students to make decisions regarding important matters related to their work in the world. Those who would
promote this work cannot afford to ignore the realities of the time and we must be willing to adapt our message
to the forms in which it can best be received. The failure to do so in the past has limited the effectiveness of
our most important tool for planetary transformation. In the future we can expect that the present language
barriers will not exist and people will come to understand and appreciate the original wording. But now, during
this interim transition period, what matters is that people use it, because that is the only way by which its
power can be released in the world. It is hoped that in the coming years the Invocation will begin to be
recognized more widely by the global community.
"The Great Invocation is used by members of the
Hierarchy with "constancy, exactitude and power" and he (the Tibetan Teacher Dwhjal Khul - LH)
encouraged us to use it and distribute it and to help make World Invocation Day known throughout the world,
and to make this a major endeavor.
"The Tibetan started an activity known as Triangles to deepen the effectiveness of the Great
Invocation. People who participate in Triangles are effectively part of a world-wide group effort aimed at the
transformation of planetary consciousness. This is a simple meditative and visualization exercise in which three
people agree to link up each day to use the Invocation as a form of planetary service. This work is subjective
and does not have to be coordinated in time and space. Another important aspect of the Triangles work relates to
its ability to transform the configuration of the planetary etheric body. At the present time that body is said
to be composed of a series of squares which are inert conductors of energy, the square being the symbol of the
personality life. The effectiveness of the Triangles network lies in its ability to transform the etheric
structure of the planet into a series of interlocking triangles, the symbol of the soul."
